Problem Tech Solves

In a world in which digital health is increasingly benefiting patients and physicians, the treatment of epilepsy is lagging behind. Epilepsy affects over 65 million people worldwide, with millions more diagnosed each year. Many people never reach freedom from seizures, because tracking their condition is tedious, specialist care is hard to access, and medication plans are not personalized. Epsy uniquely offers a better way to live with epilepsy. It is a leading telehealth platform for the management of epilepsy that empowers patients, caregivers and healthcare professionals. Epsy simplifies managing epilepsy by creating a data rich diary to track seizures, medication compliance and triggers. Patient-recorded entries are analyzed for trends and patterns, helping epilepsy patients better understand their condition and improve their quality of life. With over 100k downloads, Epsy has become the go-to app for epilepsy, as it offers, for the first time ever in the epilepsy market, a combination of patient-centric design, the latest mobile-app and machine learning technologies, and continuous iteration through extensive user research. Epsy delivers a user experience that also improves the lives of those with epilepsy: in an independent survey sent to over 2,420 users, 97.5% of respondents said Epsy makes it easier for them to track their epilepsy. Our engagement program encourages the collection of more data (for example, users create daily reminders and receive tailored content) so we can more accurately analyze patterns and flag possible seizure triggers or side effects.

Tech Brief

Epsy offers a better way to live with epilepsy. Previously patients would struggle with paper diaries or apps that were complex and difficult to maintain. Epsy is a free app for iOS and Android that simplifies managing epilepsy by creating a data rich, user-friendly diary to track seizures, medication compliance and triggers. Patient-recorded entries are analyzed for trends and patterns, helping epilepsy patients better understand their condition and improve their quality of life. Epsy leverages some of the latest technologies in iOS 14, Android 11, as well as Apple HealthKit, Google Fit, and Apple Watch. Combining patient logs for medications, seizures, triggers, auras and side-effects with biometric signals, like heart rate and activity data, Epsy truly fits the daily lives of epileptic patients who need a powerful, yet simple solution that can be used even on the onset of seizures. By combining innovative technologies, user-centric designs and state-of-the-art data analytics, Epsy provides patients and physicians with actionable insights that can help to accelerate the pathway towards better outcomes. Additionally, by working with its companion app for physicians (Epsy Hub), Epsy App helps medical professionals to care better for their patients, allows remote monitoring of patients in secluded locations, and facilitates patient-doctor interactions during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Tech Differentiators

Epsy offers an unique user-centric approach to the management of epilepsy, each comment or suggestion provided to our support team is added into our roadmap and prioritized in terms of demand. Each feature suggestion goes through extensive user-research with patients, caregivers and physicians, to ensure it is simple, understandable and completely fit for purpose. Medical apps can be confusing and filled with jargon that the everyday user might not understand, Epsy removes confusion with a simple yet elegant design that allows all users to utilize the app delightfully. Epsy’s design mirrors our mission: making each day with epilepsy brighter than the last. People living with epilepsy can often feel a sense of loneliness. Not being able to find others with a similar experience can be isolating. With Epsy, our users feel a sense of community and reassurance, unlike any other offering on the market. Our articles and informational pieces give a sense of calm, but also inspiration and support through hearing stories like their own, “there is a whole community on there you can connect with and relate to, it’s amazing” says Epsy user Ashley, while Matt states “The content is great, the more we hear stories from people like us, the better we can relate and come to terms with it”. Epsy’s content breaks through the clutter of the verbose texts traditionally found when researching epilepsy, bringing clarity to epilepsy patients and carers.

Validation

Epsy has received over 1,600 reviews across the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store, with an overall rating of 4.75 out of 5 stars. In an independent survey sent to over 2,420 users, 97.5% of respondents said Epsy makes it easier for them to track their epilepsy. Our engagement program encourages the collection of more data (for example, users create daily reminders and receive tailored content) so we can more accurately analyze patterns and flag possible seizure triggers or side effects. Reading our users’ comments, it would be hard to find another app focusing on a serious chronic medical condition in which the word “love” appears so often! - a great feat for an app focusing on a serious medical condition. Some examples include: 1) Lauren, a caregiver to a 9-year old with drug-resistant epilepsy, who says; “It’s amazing! It’s so user friendly.” 2) Jesse, a person living with epilepsy “I’m able to log while I’m having a seizure.” 3) Marketing professional Matt who lives with epilepsy says “I love the app and what the team is doing. The community is great, the more we hear stories from people like us, the better we can come to terms with it.” 4) Teacher Cody says Epsy has improved his medication compliance, “Thanks to Epsy I haven’t missed a medication in several months.”
