Problem Tech Solves

Tech Brief

Studies show an association between poorer health outcomes and how far a person lives from healthcare facilities they need to access. This association is evident at all levels of geography—local, urban, and rural. Access to in-person care can be severely limited by location, affordability, and the ongoing shortage of MSK providers. This is true not only for MSK conditions but for healthcare at large, a fact which has dramatic implications for the health and lives of millions. While MSK pain, especially back pain, is one of the leading reasons for physician visits, patients often require multiple in-person visits to receive sufficient care (pharmaceutical, physical, mental, or otherwise). For those with more acute conditions, traditional physical therapy (PT), nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and even surgery are all common treatment options. Each has its own limitations, such as a demanding time commitment, high costs, and access barriers. Our motion analysis technology has been demonstrated to be as accurate as a physical therapist in providing exercise corrections, resulting in equitable care regardless of size, age, race, gender, or location. The Kaia model of care is based on a multimodal approach that addresses the biopsychosocial aspects of pain recovery. This approach has been demonstrated to be more effective at improving patient outcomes than treatments that address only the physical level of pain.

Tech Differentiators

Kaia Health was the first digital MSK company to provide personalized therapy programs that require no wearables or external sensors. Sensor-based approaches analyze movement only where the sensor is placed and across one angle or range of motion. Straps and sensors can be difficult to adjust for those across the spectrum of age, BMI, and pain location/severity. Instead, our motion analysis technology maps movement in 3 dimensions to capture more information and provide more accurate user feedback. It creates a seamless user experience driving superior clinical outcomes. Developed by industry-leading computer scientists, the Kaia Health AI Lab is devoted to developing PT-grade pain management programs that adapt and respond to users’ individual needs. Unlike competing technologies that require wearable sensors, Kaia Health’s motion analysis technology is delivered directly through a user’s device, takes seconds to set up, and increases exercise safety and effectiveness. Our outcomes speak for themselves; patients achieve an average 57% pain reduction, and 80% of patients report clinically significant improvements within two weeks of consistent use of the Kaia MSK app. We help our clients reduce MSK spend by up to 80%. As we expand into treating different conditions across the spectrum of healthcare, we will continue to bring this spirit of technological innovation and equitable access to every therapeutic we launch. With the launch of the Kaia Health COPD app in the EU, we are already taking next steps to expand our reach and bring world-class digital therapies to even more lives.

Validation

Kaia Health is the leader in clinical evidence in digital musculoskeletal therapy research, with 11 ongoing and published peer-reviewed publications conducted by leading academic institutions in the US and EU. Effectiveness: A randomized control trial with more than n=1,200 people found that Kaia Health drove a 33% pain decrease after 3 months. Pain reduction was higher when looking at a high-risk member cohort: atients with acute conditions had a 43% pain decrease, demonstrating that Kaia can deliver an even better quality of care in a higher-risk pool. This same study found that people with anxiety showed 115% improvement over the control group, depression 117% improvement over the control group, and stress a full 200% improvement over the control group. Safety: The industry’s first comprehensive safety study of digital MSK care demonstrated Kaia Health’s ability to deliver high-quality, equitable care to patients. The study evaluated the safety profile of the Kaia Health MSK solution by performing a comprehensive assessment of reported adverse events (AEs) by nearly n=140,000 users. Results show that Kaia Health’s MSK app is extremely safe to use, with fewer than 1% of users reporting an adverse event. Cost Savings: In December 2021, Kaia Health demonstrated that its MSK solution reduces costs by 80% when compared with standard-of-care treatments. The findings come from the ongoing Rise-uP RTC, the largest RCT to date in the digital MSK industry. The multicenter trial results involved an examination of claims data from n=1,237 patients with low back pain followed over a 12-month period.
