Problem Tech Solves

Tech Brief

ixlayer is creating a fundamental change in the way people are able to approach their health, starting with lab testing. Why lab testing? If you stop to think about it, we still live in the dark ages when it comes to our health. We talk so much about data - we have such vast technology gathering and analyzing millions upon millions of health-related data points every day - and yet the vast majority of us do lab testing just once a year (at most!). What this means is that we, and our doctors, see a single snapshot in time, rather than an ongoing read-out of how our bodies are doing. It would be like driving a car without dashboard lights, and only checking oil, gas and tire pressure once a year. What we really need is data over time, to see if high cholesterol levels, for example, are an anomaly or an ongoing concern. What ixlayer does is make more frequent testing possible - both financially and logistically. The most exciting thing about our solution is that we are reimagining a complex diagnostic laboratory testing ecosystem, and removing the complexity. The future of consumer healthcare starts with testing, and by removing traditional barriers, we can shift the entire paradigm from reactive care to proactive care, improve access, increase speed of drug development, and create new efficiencies for stakeholders across the entire healthcare system.

Tech Differentiators

How would public health change if consumers had unfettered access to frequent, reliable, convenient lab testing? What if you could catch cancer earlier, before it was even Stage 1? Could we determine a need for dietary changes, or detect a hormonal imbalance? 70% of all medical decisions depend on lab testing while a large portion of the population is unaware of their condition or unable to access testing. What if everyone had access to diagnostic testing that could help prevent diabetes, the 7th leading cause of death in the United States? 96 million US adults—over a third—have prediabetes, and more than 80% of them don’t know they have it. This is the power of diagnostic testing -- and yet most people do it once a year at most, giving a snapshot representing only a single moment in time, rather than an ongoing story. ixlayer’s superpower is the ability to change that. As a healthtech company that pairs remote lab testing with digital experiences, ixlayer is building the future of healthcare by making more frequent lab testing possible – both financially and logistically – so that more people can get informed and stay healthy. Our vision is simple: by increasing access to affordable and easy testing options, we can make the world healthier. By combining next-generation patient experiences with lab testing and seamless back-end integration, ixlayer offers thousands of test types. Each year, ixlayer orders millions of diagnostic tests on behalf of our customers with the mission to drive better health outcomes.

At ixlayer, it's all about helping people - especially those with chronic conditions who lack access to care. One of the successes we are most proud of is helping a national health plan address kidney health evaluation for patients with diabetes. This hard-to-reach population needed screenings and ixlayer’s solution met a variety of criteria critical to program success, including the ability to offer a breadth of best-in-class diagnostic capabilities for managing kidney health, as well as in-home mobile phlebotomy services. Not only did these patients receive the kidney screenings, but the blood draw was also used to perform up to four other diagnostic tests from one visit. This combination of in-home consults and self-collection kits allowed for the flexibility in how members preferred to receive care, which led to higher completion and accuracy rates, in turn improving ROI by 50% compared to an alternative solution.
