Tech Brief

In a 2021 AARP study of geographic differences of digital use for virtual care, it was reported that 58% of older adults in rural communities noted access to high speed internet as an issue. Of these older adults in rural communities, 30% said they would video chat with a provider if they knew how. Recora has successfully achieved meaningful engagement among older adults, and is minting digital natives. Recora’s median patient age is 78, and our current NPS is 85. Our technology platform is optimized for first-time users of virtual care. In fact, 60% of patients use Recora as their first virtual care experience. Our platform allows us to remotely control the user interface, a pre-installed data plan ensures patient connectivity, and a patient technology support team is deployed for troubleshooting. Our multidisciplinary care team goes beyond a standard cardiac rehabilitation intervention to create an immersive experience in a patient's home that integrates social determinants of health & behavioral health. Recora builds long-term clinical relationships that connect back to a PCP/specialist and provide ongoing monitoring/support in the home. Our business model creates true partnerships with health systems, medical groups, and health plan partners. We participate in both fee-for-service and value-based arrangements, but more fundamentally, we become a partner in every step of the process to improve engagement and outcomes. Leveraging our proprietary algorithms and technology-first outreach process, we routinely increase program engagement by 3-5x for our partners without the need to invest in additional staff, technology, or real estate.

Problem Tech Solves

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S., and $215 billion is spent each year on treatment. By 2030, nearly 40% of the population is predicted to have some form of cardiovascular disease. Cardiac rehabilitation has the ability to increase life expectancy by five years, reduce the risk of mortality by 30%, and reduce hospital readmissions by 40%. It is a Class 1 recommendation and is backed by 35 years’ worth of research. Despite its proven track record, fewer than 20% of eligible patients begin the program, and of that, less than 10% finish. Research shows that copays, travel distance, and 7-12 week wait times are all barriers to care. At discharge, gaps in cardiac rehabilitation referrals disproportionately affect women and people of color. Virtual cardiac rehabilitation increases access to treatment for patients, especially those who live too far from a facility, are homebound, or don’t have adequate transportation available to them. Research has shown that home-based programs have proven similar outcomes to facility-based programs, and often at a lower cost. 60% of Recora patients are first-time users of virtual care. Recora’s median patient age is 78 years old, and 40% of Recora patients live in a rural geography.
