Delivering the future of healthcare today

Tech Brief

KATE AI is designed for nurses, by nurses. KATE does not require clinicians or patients to login to a new application or device to function. KATE supports nurses in real-time within their EHR without any disruption to their workflow, allowing nurses to retain their established best practices without interruption. Unlike many other healthcare applications, KATE is a listening technology that monitors clinical EHR data in the background 24/7 using machine learning and clinical natural language processing. KATE’s cloud service is directly integrated into the EHR HL7 message stream and provides accurate and timely notifications over native EHR alerting mechanisms so nurses improve critical thinking and can care for the patient in front of them. Our customers embrace KATE, and recognize KATE as a critical member of their care team improving patient outcomes. KATE has proven that empowering nurses at the point of care supports achieving the Quadruple Aim of healthcare. -Improve patient outcomes by routing patients on the right clinical pathway -Improve patient experience with reduced wait times and patient safety -Reduce total cost of care by lowering ED and inpatient Length of Stay (LOS) -Improved ED Nurse wellness, retention, resilience, and satisfaction

Problem Tech Solves

Up to 70% of the patients admitted into hospitals originate from the Emergency Department (ED). Timing is key, and properly assessing patients from the moment they walk into the ED plays a significant role in patient outcomes, especially for patients with high risk conditions. When the pandemic struck, it left hospitals with new graduate nurses and less experienced nurses who are now required to take care of increasingly complex patients. The result has caused a widening “experience-complexity” gap which is exacerbated by diminished staffing, training, and nursing support. The emergency nurse turnover rate is currently at 29.7% in 2021 (up 48% from 2020), and ER Nurses have one of the longest recruitment periods across nursing specialties - around 88 days. With high turnover, and burnout rates among nurses at an all time high of 75%, there is no clear or sustainable solution for health systems to resolve this staffing crisis. KATE AI provides 24/7 trusted in-the-moment clinical guidance for emergency nurses to identify high-risk patients at the front door of the hospital, providing them the support they need in busy and understaffed EDs alike. Nurses love KATE because it works in real-time within the EHR and provides clinically meaningful guidance, without disrupting their current workflow. KATE has their back.

Validation

One of our customers and innovation partners, Adventist Health White Memorial (AHWM), independently conducted a return on investment (ROI) analysis. They realized a significant return on investment of $1.4M (or 10x), encompassing a broad range of clinical, operational and financial improvements: -30% Increase in ED Nurse Retention with real-time learning/support -Decreased Inpatient Length of Stay (LOS) -Decreased ED Length of Stay -Reduced Left Without Being Seen (LWBS) -Improved Acuity Assignment at Triage -Early Sepsis Detection and Intervention With the breakthrough success at AHWM, KATE is now the standard of care system-wide across all Emergency Departments at Adventist Health. The research behind KATE data was published in a peer-review journal, Journal of Emergency Nursing (JEN) in March 2021. The research shows KATE understands high risk patients, enabling nurses with real-time AI clinical guidance to decrease preventable errors and accelerate learning. KATE’s accuracy was 26.9% higher than the average nurse accuracy (P <.001). For high-risk patients (between ESI 2 and 3 acuity assignments), KATE’s accuracy was 93.2% higher, with 80% accuracy compared with triage nurses 41.4% accuracy (P <.001).
