Problem Tech Solves

The status quo in physical therapy is not working for patients. In the current system, patients are forced to wait 26 days before starting their physical therapy care, and 70 percent never complete their full treatment plan. Patients are often willing and able to travel far for a procedure or surgery, but they are significantly less likely to do the same for the numerous physical therapy appointments that follow. Instead, they get their treatment at an independent clinic where their surgeon cannot verify or standardize the quality of care, or they forgo treatment altogether. Physical therapy is often just as important as the procedure itself, so patients who do not complete their treatment plan are at increased risk of poor outcomes, rehospitalization, or injury. For many patients, however, travelling to a clinic consistently for an extended period is inconvenient, which is why 63 percent of patients prefer at-home care to physical therapy in the clinic. Though the COVID-19 pandemic has driven services into virtual platforms, physical therapy has proven to be more effective in person. Luna provides a solution that allows patients to remain in the comfort and safety of their home, while still receiving the best treatment.

Tech Brief

Luna is the leader in on-demand physical therapy, delivering outpatient physical therapy beyond the four walls of a clinic. Using its best-in-class technology platform, Luna seamlessly matches patients to a therapist based on specialty, geography, schedules, and other factors. Luna’s broad network of local physical therapists provide the same high-quality care in the home that might be administered in a traditional clinic. Therapists will visit the patient at the time and location of the patient’s choosing. By delivering care in-person, Luna therapists can completely evaluate the patient and create a unique care plan catered to the patient’s individual needs and goals. The same physical therapist will treat the patient for the entire treatment plan. Between visits, patients can use the Luna platform to communicate with therapists, set next appointment times, perform therapist-prescribed exercises, and track the recovery process. Through the convenience of delivery, while still ensuring patients meet with the same physical therapist each time, Luna removes some of the most significant barriers to care and improves adherence, pain improvement, and overall health outcomes. Not to mention, Luna’s treatment times extend longer than an in-person clinic; instead of a patient visiting a clinic for 10-15 minutes and then being transitioned to an aid or a group setting, Luna provides dedicated one-on-one personalized sessions that last between 45 and 55 minutes. All these factors lead to more consistent adherence in therapy treatments and improved outcomes.

Tech Differentiators

Central to the success of Luna’s model, and at-home care broadly, is that it’s delivered in person, compared to the growing surplus of companies providing digital-only care. One of the misconceptions facilitated by the pandemic is that at-home care always equates to telehealth, which requires technology proficiency and access to the internet. This further increases barriers to care for some, resulting in one quarter of adults saying they aren’t interested in at-home care due to perceived technology requirements. In-person care removes these barriers and allows patients to receive the same level of personal interaction they’re used to, all from the comfort of their home. The need for in-person care is especially notable when it comes to physical therapy, which requires the physical presence of a therapist to help the patient pinpoint the issue, deliver a wide range of services, and assist the patient through their recovery. Without a therapist present, engagement is likely to decline, resulting in high dropout rates. The Luna technology platform matches a patient’s needs with a therapist’s specialties and availability, with 97% of patients staying with one therapist––ensuring continuity of care. Our platform automates this matching and scheduling (and even calculates drive times with traffic and seasonality adjustments), and optimizes the routes therapists take to keep them as productive as possible. The platform also ensures a seamless experience for charting, billing, and compliance, and can be integrated into existing EMR systems such as Epic and Cerner.

Validation

Recent research that Luna conducted found that 55.9 percent (from a sample size of over 3.4 million) of patients left their health system for physical therapy, an estimated $2.5 billion in lost revenue for the health systems. Even health systems most successful at patient retention have leakage rates at or above 50 percent. That means over half their patients are receiving physical therapy of undetermined quality or no physical therapy at all. This research also showed that the driving factor in determining whether a patient completes their physical therapy is convenience. Patients are unwilling to travel more than a few miles for care, meaning health systems either need to build enough clinics to service a broad enough geography or find a way to deliver care to patients' homes. By providing on-demand, at-home delivery and a seamless patient experience, Luna solves for the convenience problem and increases the likelihood that patients complete their rehabilitation, resulting in better health outcomes. Luna users have a 50 percent higher adherence rate than in-clinic visits and achieve an average 45 percent pain improvement within 10 visits, 15 points higher than the industry average. Patients who visit traditional outpatient clinics experience an average wait of 26 days, which is eliminated with Luna.

Why Us

Luna is delivering physical therapy unlike anyone else. Their in-person, outpatient service paired with the best-in-class technology platform creates a totally new hybrid model of care. At the intersection of at-home care and digital health, Luna creates better care for all stakeholders: patients, physicians, systems, and therapists.
