Problem Tech Solves

The Quil platform helps people navigate healthcare events, such as an operation, a pregnancy or managing a chronic condition, in partnership with their family, healthcare providers and health plans. Quil confronts the unique challenge of encouraging patients to engage with and take ownership of their health journeys to promote plan adherence and ultimately improve health outcomes, saving patients money spent on healthcare in the long run and cutting costs for providers, as well as saving precious time for physicians and clinical staff. Quil has seen exciting results with partner organizations. In use at partner organizations Quil is lowering readmission rates and improving discharge-to-home rates; for example, at partner organization Penn Medicine, the Orthopaedic Surgery Department saw a 26% decrease in readmission rates after implementing Quil. Quil addresses the problem of care plan adherence and lack of patient engagement, not only by connecting patients to both their caregivers and providers, but also by meeting patients “where they are,” on their smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, computers and even on Comcast subscribed televisions, to maximize the impact of essential health information and ultimately cut costs for provider, payor and patient. For patients, having access to engaging, trustworthy and personalized health information can drastically improve preparedness for healthcare events and adherence to post-operation care plans. Particularly for aging populations, access via televisions can encourage higher use and make essential health information all the more accessible.

Tech Brief

Quil is a digital health platform that provides personalized and interactive health journeys to consumers and their caregivers. The platform functions as an app on smartphones, tablets, smartwatches and computers, and is accessible on televisions through Comcast. The patient experience within the platform is tailored to each patient, and offers a step-by-step guide through a particular healthcare journey. For example, Quil has developed user-focused guides for various partner providers and payor organizations, for procedures like knee or hip replacements, bariatric surgeries or navigating oncological treatments, in addition to managing anxiety and depression, hearing aid consideration or the COVID vaccine. Quil builds out health journeys and solutions particular to the needs of each partner organization it works with. Beyond this function, Quil also operates as a point of connection between patient and caregiver with Caregiving Circle – a function that allows a patient easily invite family and friends to join them while they navigate a specific health event or as they manage their health day to day. Quil also allows for easier administration and monitoring of care plans by providers. By linking patients directly to information from their provider in the form of videos and interactive content; physicians and clinical staff are freed up to reallocate precious time and resources to helping more patients and providing the best care possible, with the onus of providing reminders to patients for appointments and next steps no longer falling on clinical staff.

Tech Differentiators

Quil differs from other options available on the market in several ways: its versatility and ability to build out to scale health journey programs that fit whatever a partner organization’s needs may be; its accessibility, specifically its accessibility to aging populations in its TV interface; and its ability to solve problems faced by all stakeholders in the healthcare system – providers, payors, caregivers and of course, patients themselves. With Quil, clinicians can monitor how patients are doing at home, gather patient-reported outcomes, and focus on the highest value-activities. Quil’s versatility shines in this are as well, as the platform can be integrated into existing workflows or used standalone. Ultimately, providers see reduced operational costs, and both provider and patient benefit and save money from reduced avoidable readmission or ER visits and reduced length of stay, motivated by improved health literacy and care plan adherence when a patient is utilizing Quil. It is through this approach that Quil has helped provider partners well surpass their expected goals and see incredible improvements in health outcomes and care efficiency, such as 15% reduction in length-of-stay, 19% improved discharge-to-home rates, 92% patient-reported-outcome completion. Beyond reducing burdens on clinical staff and doctors, patients themselves report 93% improved feelings of preparedness when going through a health event or surgery when using Quil.

Validation

Quil has shown impressive results in reduced cost, improved health outcomes and patient satisfaction, as well as in patient preparedness. In areas of concern related to patient cost savings, Quil has allowed organizations to significantly improve operational efficiencies to cut costs and improve care. In regards to improved health outcomes, partner organizations report a 15% reduction in length-of-stay and 19% improved discharge-to-home rates. When Penn Medicine first implemented Quil during a trial in its Orthopaedic Surgery Department; Quil helped the department surpass its department goal by 22% for discharge-to-home rates and decreased readmissions by 26%. With Quil, the department has also been able to transition away from in-person information courses and paper pamphlets as a means of informing the patient – instead utilizing the Quil platform to maintain communication and information sharing between doctor and patient so that consumers can access essential health information at any time, freeing up clinical staff schedules as well. Penn Medicine has since become a full-time Quil partner and continues to build out its program with Quil’s platform. Please see attached with this nomination the Quil / Penn Medicine Customer Success story.
